The town was named after Tioga County, Pennsylvania, by early settlers who had migrated from that region, bringing their northeastern heritage to the Texas frontier during the great westward expansion.
In 2020, Tioga completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks and period lighting. Country music songwriter Red Lane, who penned hits for Merle Haggard including 'The Fugitive' and 'If We Make It Through December,' was born and raised in Tioga. Lane's songs earned multiple Grammy nominations and helped define the Bakersfield sound of country music in the 1960s and 1970s.
Tioga sits on one of the largest underground salt domes in North Texas, which was discovered in the 1920s during oil exploration. The salt dome extends nearly 2,000 feet below ground and has influenced the area's geology so significantly that some local wells produce naturally salty water that early settlers used for preserving meat.
Every October, Tioga hosts the annual Pumpkin Festival, which transforms the tiny town into a fall wonderland with over 10,000 pumpkins lining the streets and decorating every storefront.
