AboutSouth Padre Island
Did You Know?
HISTORICAL: South Padre Island was named after José Nicolas Ballí, a Spanish priest known as Padre Ballí, who received a land grant to Padre Island in 1829. For much of its history, the island remained largely uninhabited and was used primarily for ranching and fishing. Development of South Padre Island as a resort destination began in earnest after the construction of the Queen Isabella Causeway in 1954, which connected the island to the mainland and made it accessible to tourists. The town incorporated as a city in 1973 as development accelerated.
RECENT: In September 2023, South Padre Island experienced significant coastal impacts from Hurricane Beulah's remnants, leading to beach erosion concerns and emergency management responses. The city has been actively pursuing beach renourishment projects in 2024 and 2025 to combat erosion and maintain its tourism infrastructure. Additionally, the city approved major hotel and condominium developments in 2024 as part of ongoing efforts to expand its hospitality capacity and accommodate growing spring break and winter tourism.
DID YOU KNOW: South Padre Island is one of the top spring break destinations in the United States, attracting over 100,000 college students annually during March. The island is also home to the world's longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island coastline, with Padre Island National Seashore protecting over 70 miles of pristine beach to the north. South Padre Island hosts one of only a handful of sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation centers in Texas, the Sea Turtle Inc., which has treated and released thousands of endangered sea turtles since 1977.
CULTURAL: South Padre Island hosts the annual Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT) every August, which has been held since 1934 and is one of the oldest fishing tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico. The island also celebrates Fathers Day Weekend with Kingfish Tournament events and SandFest in February, which draws master sand sculptors from around the world to create elaborate works of art on the beach. During winter, the island becomes a hub for birdwatching enthusiasts, as it lies along the Central Flyway migration route and hosts numerous species including the endangered piping plover.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in South Padre Island
#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!
Discovering how much electricity you will use month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on power in South Padre Island. Why is this important?
The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).
Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will vary depending on how much electricity you consume in a month.
Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying a "price per kWh" different than what you saw when you enrolled.
Fortunately, there's a better way to select your electricity company.
Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.
Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to discover the right electricity rate plan for your home.
Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in just moments.
We put you in the driver's seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the electricity rate plan that's best for your household's consumption.
We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees, so you'll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.
We then assist you in enrolling with your chosen energy provider without ever having to leave our website.
The takeaway here is you should understand your expected or historical usage before choosing the right electricity plan for your home.
If you don't know your usage, estimate
Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.
While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly choosing the first plan you see advertised by an energy provider at a specific usage that isn't what you'll consume.
Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Switching Electricity Companies in South Padre Island
Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract is close to expiring.
Your existing electricity provider will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to act, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.
Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.
Switching is easy:
- You don't have to call your current provider to cancel (no "break-up call")
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your power supply
- It takes just minutes
When you switch, your new energy provider will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.
Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in South Padre Island is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an "early cancellation" penalty. That's Texas Law.
If you're still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.
And even if you're well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.
If you're ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the best rate.
You will want to find your past usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
