Reno was established in 1888 as a railroad town along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, originally named after Civil War General Jesse Reno who died at the Battle of South Mountain. Country music songwriter and performer Don Cook, who wrote hits for Brooks & Dunn, George Strait, and other major artists, was born and raised in Reno. Reno is home to one of the last remaining original Katy Railroad depots in East Texas, built in 1902 and still standing on Main Street. The depot was constructed with special earthquake-resistant features after the 1900 Galveston hurricane, making it one of the most structurally unique small-town railroad buildings in the state, though earthquakes are extremely rare in this part of Texas.
