The tower was built in 1993 after the city discovered that Paris, Tennessee had built a 60-foot replica, prompting Paris, Texas to build theirs 5 feet taller to claim bragging rights as the superior American Paris.
Paris hosts the annual Red River Valley Fair, one of the oldest county fairs in Texas, which has been running continuously since 1911 except during World War II.
