HISTORICAL

Nixon was founded in 1906 and named after John T. Nixon, a local rancher and businessman who donated land for the railroad depot. The town grew rapidly as a shipping point for cattle and agricultural products along the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad, becoming a vital link between South Texas ranches and northern markets.

RECENT

In 2020, Nixon completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Nixon Avenue and created a new community plaza. The $2.3 million project included new sidewalks, period lighting, and landscaping that has attracted new businesses and increased tourism to the small town.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Nixon was the childhood home of country music songwriter Hank Cochran, who penned classics like 'Make the World Go Away' and 'I Fall to Pieces.' Cochran grew up on a farm outside Nixon during the Great Depression and often credited his rural Texas upbringing for inspiring his heartfelt songwriting style that made him a Nashville legend.

DID YOU KNOW

Nixon holds the unusual distinction of being one of the few Texas towns where the main street was deliberately built extra wide to accommodate cattle drives passing through town. The original Nixon Avenue was constructed 120 feet wide in 1906, nearly twice the width of typical main streets, so cowboys could drive herds down the middle while wagons and pedestrians used the sides safely.

CULTURAL

Every October, Nixon hosts the annual Peanut Festival celebrating the town's agricultural heritage as a major peanut-growing region. The festival features peanut cooking contests, live music, and the crowning of the Peanut Queen, drawing thousands of visitors to this small town of fewer than 2,500 residents for a weekend celebration that has continued for over 40 years.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Nixon

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Understanding how much energy you consume monthly is the best way to shop for electricity in Nixon. Why is this important?

The rate you see power companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you use each month.

Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective "price per kWh" different than what you saw when you ordered.

Fortunately, there's a better way to select your electricity provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on anticipated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.

Better yet, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the ideal electricity plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.

We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and guiding you step-by-step to the electricity rate plan that's best for your home's consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing the various charges, so you'll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your monthly bill.

We then help you sign up with your selected energy company without ever having to leave our service.

The takeaway here is you must understand your expected or historical usage before selecting the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don't know your usage, estimate

If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage or own a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.

Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.

Use Compare Power to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Nixon: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Nixon, to get the best rate, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home's usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our "Help Me Choose" tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool can assess your home's projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan instantly through Compare Power. We will remind you when it's time to come back to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Nixon

Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate each year when your contract is close to expiring.

Your existing energy company will normally raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you do not act, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy providers.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don't have to contact your current provider to cancel (no "break-up call")
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything, including canceling service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Nixon is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date up to 14 days before your contract ends without an "early termination" penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you're still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you're well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching providers may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.

If you're ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

You will want to find your historical usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
