AboutKerens
Did You Know?
Kerens was founded in 1881 as a railroad town along the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, also known as the Cotton Belt Route. The town was named after Richard C. Kerens, a wealthy railroad financier and Republican politician from Missouri who helped fund the railway's expansion through East Texas. The railroad brought prosperity to the area, making it a key shipping point for cotton and other agricultural products from the surrounding Blackland Prairie.
In 2020, Kerens completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks, street lighting, and landscaping. The project was funded through a combination of state grants and local investment, breathing new life into the historic downtown district and attracting new businesses to the area.
Kerens was the birthplace of Audie Murphy, America's most decorated World War II soldier who later became a Hollywood movie star. Murphy was born in 1925 in a sharecropper's cabin near Kerens and went on to receive every major U.S. military combat award for valor, including the Medal of Honor. After the war, he starred in 44 films, most notably playing himself in the 1955 autobiographical film 'To Hell and Back.'
Kerens is home to one of the last remaining original Cotton Belt Railway depots in Texas, which now serves as a museum and community center. The depot was built in 1902 and features the distinctive red brick architecture typical of Cotton Belt stations, complete with the original telegraph equipment and waiting room benches. Local volunteers have maintained the building for over 40 years, preserving artifacts from the town's railroad heyday.
Every October, Kerens hosts the annual Cotton Harvest Festival, celebrating the town's agricultural heritage with a parade, live music, and the crowning of the Cotton Queen. The festival features demonstrations of traditional cotton farming techniques, including hand-picking contests and displays of antique cotton farming equipment. Local families have been participating in this tradition for over 50 years, with some Cotton Queens being daughters and granddaughters of previous winners.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Kerens
#1 rule: Determine what your usage is!
Determining the amount of electricity you will consume month-to-month is the best way to find a deal on power in Kerens. Why is this important?
The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).
Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly bill is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you use in a month.
Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a "price per kWh" different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.
Thankfully, there's a better way to choose your energy provider.
Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the lowest rate.
Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the ideal way to find your home's ideal energy rate plan.
Compare Power does all the complicated math for you in an instant. What could take you hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few moments.
We put you in the driver's seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and assisting you step-by-step with the energy rate plan that's best for your household's usage.
We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you'll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.
We then help you order your plan with your selected energy provider without leaving our service.
The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before selecting the right electricity plan for your home.
If you don't know your usage, estimate
If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you're the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.
Although knowing the previous 12 months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.
Use Compare Power to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.

Switching Electricity Companies in Kerens
Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract expires.
Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.
Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity companies.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.
Switching is easy:
- You don't have to call your current provider to cancel (no "break-up call")
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your power supply
- It takes just minutes
When you decide to switch, your new electricity company will handle everything for you, including terminating service with your previous company.
Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Kerens is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an "early termination" penalty. Texas law protects you here.
If you're still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.
And even if you're well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.
If you're ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.
Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.
