Though he fought for Mexico, Zaragoza was born in Texas when it was still part of Mexico, making him a unique figure in both Texas and Mexican history.
Goliad is home to the oldest continuously operating courthouse in Texas, and the town's name is actually an anagram of 'Hidalgo,' named after Father Miguel Hidalgo, the father of Mexican independence. The Spanish rearranged the letters when they established the presidio here in 1749, creating a completely unique place name that exists nowhere else in the world.
