AboutCumby
Did You Know?
Cumby was founded in 1879 and named after R.H. Cumby, a railroad official with the Texas and Pacific Railway. The town grew rapidly as a railroad stop and agricultural center, becoming a vital shipping point for cotton and other crops from the fertile East Texas blackland prairie during the late 19th century.
In 2020, Cumby completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Main Street and added new sidewalks and period lighting. The project was funded through a combination of state grants and local fundraising efforts, bringing new businesses and visitors to the small town's historic core.
Country music singer and songwriter Don Henley of the Eagles was born in nearby Gilmer but spent part of his childhood in the Cumby area. The town also produced several notable rodeo champions in the 1960s and 1970s who competed on the professional circuit and helped put Cumby on the map in Texas rodeo circles.
Cumby is home to one of the last remaining original Texas and Pacific Railway depots in East Texas, built in 1881. The depot now serves as a museum and community center, and still contains the original telegraph equipment used to coordinate train schedules over 140 years ago, including a working 1880s-era telegraph key.
Every October, Cumby hosts the annual Cumby Founders Day Festival, which features a unique tradition called the 'Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off' where local farmers compete to grow the largest pumpkins in East Texas. The festival also includes a vintage tractor parade and a pie-baking contest that has been running continuously since 1952, with recipes passed down through generations of local families.

How to find the best energy plan in Cumby
#1 rule: Know your usage!
Knowing the amount of energy you will use each month is the best way to shop for electricity in Cumby. Why is this important?
The "price per kWh" you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 2000 kWh).
Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you consume in a month.
Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying a "price per kWh" different than the one you saw advertised when you enrolled.
Fortunately, there's a better way to choose your electricity rate.
Calculating your expected monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the best rate for you.
Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the right energy rate plan for your home.
Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What could take you hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.
We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of plans and guiding you to the energy rate plan that's best for your household's consumption.
We clarify the details, disclosing all fees, so you'll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your monthly bill.
We then help you order your plan with your chosen electricity provider without leaving our website.
The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before choosing the right energy plan for your home.
If you don't know your usage, estimate
If you cannot acquire 12 months of historical usage, or you're the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.
While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn't what you'll consume.
Use Compare Power to find the best energy plan for yourspecific usage.

Switching electricity companies in Cumby
Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower rate every year when your contract is about to expire.
Your existing energy company will generally raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly more than the plan you signed up for.
Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing energy companies.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.
Switching is easy:
When you decide to switch, your new electricity provider will take care of everything for you, including canceling service with your previous provider.
Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Cumby is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can pick any date up to 14 days early from your current contract's end date without an "early cancellation" fee. Texas law protects you here.
If you're still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.
The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.
If you're ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the lowest price.
You will want to find your past usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
