HISTORICAL

Mexia was founded in 1871 and named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Mexican revolutionary who fought for Texas independence. The town experienced explosive growth during the 1920s oil boom when the discovery of the Mexia Oil Field transformed it from a small farming community into a bustling boomtown with over 35,000 residents virtually overnight.

RECENT

In 2019, Mexia completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic buildings along Commerce Street, including the conversion of the old Mexia State Bank building into a community arts center. The project has attracted new businesses and helped preserve the city's oil boom-era architecture for future generations.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Country music legend Lefty Frizzell was born in Corsicana but raised in Mexia, where he developed his distinctive honky-tonk style that influenced countless musicians including Merle Haggard and George Jones. His childhood home on East Milam Street still stands today, and the city honors his legacy with an annual music festival.

DID YOU KNOW

Mexia is home to one of the most unusual geological formations in Texas - the Mexia Fault Zone, which runs directly through the city and was responsible for trapping the oil that created the famous oil boom. The fault line is so prominent that you can actually see the elevation change as you drive down certain streets, with some buildings sitting noticeably higher than others just a block away.

CULTURAL

Every October, Mexia hosts the annual Black-Eyed Pea Festival, celebrating the legume that saved the town during the Great Depression when cotton crops failed. The festival features a unique black-eyed pea cook-off with categories ranging from traditional dishes to creative desserts, and the winner receives the coveted 'Golden Pea' trophy that has been passed down since 1982.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Mexia

#1 rule: Usage is key!

Knowing the amount of electricity you will consume in a month is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Mexia. Why should you care?

The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).

Every plan uses a different calculation for how your monthly bill is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you use each month.

Unless you use the advertised amount each month, you will pay a "price per kWh" different than the one you saw advertised when you signed up.

Thankfully, there's a better way to choose your power provider.

Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost is the best way to shop for the best rate.

Even better, if you have a year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to determine the perfect electricity plan for your home.

Compare Power does all the complicated math for you instantly. What could take you hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in moments.

We put you in the driver's seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers to assist you step-by-step with the electricity plan that's best for your home's usage.

We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges, so you'll know exactly where your money is going and what to anticipate on your monthly bill.

We then help you sign up with your selected energy company without leaving our service.

The takeaway here is you should determine your expected or historical usage before picking the right electricity plan for your home.

If you don't know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity provider at a specific usage that isn't what you'll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Moving to Mexia: Setting up Electricity

If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Mexia, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.

Ask the previous homeowner to provide you with their past 12 months of usage.

This information is readily found in recent billing statements.

Acquiring usage for the past 12 months may take effort, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.

Once you have historical usage, Compare Power will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home's usage pattern.

Note: If you cannot obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage using our "Help Me Choose" tool. By simply entering your zip code, the tool will be able to assess your home's projected electricity consumption.

Sign-up for a plan in minutes through Compare Power. We will remind you when it's time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.

Switching Electricity Companies in Mexia

Switching is good. Market conditions constantly change, so you must shop for a lower price each year when your contract expires.

Your existing energy company will typically raise your electricity rate once your term expires. If you do not take action, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, check the rates of competing energy companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your energy bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don't have to contact your current provider to cancel (no "break-up call")
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity provider will handle everything, including terminating service with your previous provider.

Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Mexia is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an "early cancellation" fee. That's Texas Law.

If you're still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.

The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.

If you're ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the best price.

You will want to find your historical usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
