HISTORICAL

Menard was founded in 1858 and named after Michel Branamour Menard, a French-Canadian fur trader who became one of the founders of Galveston. The town was established near the ruins of the Spanish Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas and Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá, both built in 1757 but destroyed by Comanche raids in 1758, making it one of the few Texas towns built literally on top of colonial Spanish ruins.

RECENT

In 2020, Menard completed a major downtown revitalization project that restored several historic limestone buildings dating to the 1880s along the town square. The project included installing period-appropriate lighting and creating a walking trail that connects the historic courthouse square to the nearby San Saba River, attracting heritage tourists and outdoor enthusiasts to this small Hill Country community.

FAMOUS PEOPLE

Menard was the childhood home of Roy Bean Jr., son of the famous 'Law West of the Pecos' Judge Roy Bean, who spent his early years here before his father became the legendary justice of the peace in Langtry. The younger Bean later became a respected rancher and businessman, though he never achieved his father's colorful reputation as the self-proclaimed 'only law west of the Pecos.'

DID YOU KNOW

Menard sits on one of the largest pecan groves in Texas, and the town holds the unofficial record for the most pecan trees per capita of any incorporated city in the state. The San Saba River valley around Menard produces over 2 million pounds of pecans annually, and many of the massive native pecan trees along the river are estimated to be over 200 years old, predating the town itself.

CULTURAL

Every October, Menard hosts the annual Jim Bowie Days festival, celebrating the legendary frontiersman who reportedly searched for silver mines in the area during the 1830s based on Spanish colonial maps. The festival features a unique 'Bowie knife throwing contest' and historical reenactments of his supposed treasure hunting expeditions, though historians debate whether Bowie actually spent significant time in the Menard area or if the local legends are more folklore than fact.

How to Find the Best Energy Plan in Menard

#1 rule: Know your usage!

Knowing how much energy you will consume month-to-month is the best way to shop for electricity in Menard. Why is this so vital?

The rate you see energy companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (usually 1000 kWh).

Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will change according to how much energy you use each month.

Unless you match the advertised usage each month, you will pay a "price per kWh" different than what you observed when you ordered.

Fortunately, there's a better way to shop for a power plan.

Calculating your total monthly bill based on estimated monthly usage, then comparing plans by the total monthly bill is the best way to shop for the best rate for your home.

Better still, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method considers the changes in usage between the summer and winter months and is the best way to find the perfect energy rate plan for your home.

Compare Power does all this math for you instantly. What could take hours inside a spreadsheet is solved in a few seconds.

We put you in the driver's seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans, and navigate you step-by-step to the energy rate plan that's best for your home's consumption.

We clarify the fine print, disclosing all fees, so you'll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.

We then assist you in ordering your plan with your selected electricity company without leaving our service.

The bottom line is you should understand your expected or historical usage before ordering the right energy plan for your home.

If you don't know your usage, estimate

Suppose you recently purchased a home or business or cannot obtain 12 months of usage history. In that case, you can always estimate your average monthly energy usage.

While not as optimal as having all the previous 12 months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an electricity company at a specific usage that isn't what you'll consume.

Use Compare Power to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.

Switching Electricity Companies in Menard

Switching is good. Market conditions are constantly in flux, so shopping for a lower price every year when your contract expires is essential.

Your existing electricity provider will generally raise your energy rate once your contract expires. If you fail to act, you'll be left on a month-to-month rate significantly higher than the plan you signed up for.

Before renewing your contract, shop the rates of competing electricity companies.

Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly on your electricity bill.

Switching is easy:

  • You don't have to contact your current provider to cancel (no "break-up call")
  • No one comes to your home
  • There is no disruption in your electricity supply
  • It takes just minutes

When you switch, your new electricity company will handle everything, including canceling service with your previous provider.

There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Menard is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.

The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch energy providers. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.

You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration without an "early cancellation" penalty. Texas law protects you here.

If you're still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most providers up to 6o days in advance.

And even if you're well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee of breaking your existing contract.

If you're ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the cheapest rate.

Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you must collect the usage history for the past 12 months.
