Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ESIIDs and this tool.

What is an ESIID?
ESIID stands for Electric Service Identifier. It's a unique 17-digit number assigned to each electric delivery point in Texas. Think of it as the "social security number" for your electrical location—it never changes even if you switch providers.
Why would I need my ESIID?
You need your ESIID to switch electricity providers, set up new service, verify your correct utility, or resolve billing issues. It's how ERCOT and providers identify your exact location.
What is a smart meter (AMS)?
AMS stands for Advanced Metering System, commonly called a "smart meter." Smart meters automatically record your usage every 15 minutes and transmit it to your utility. This enables remote meter reads, detailed usage data, and features like our Live Link alerts.
What does "De-Energized" mean?
De-energized status means electricity is currently disconnected at that location. This is common for vacant properties, new construction, or when service has been shut off. You can still order plans for de-energized locations—the provider will coordinate to turn service back on.
How often is this data updated?
ERCOT releases updated ESIID data daily. Our database syncs with the ERCOT feed every 24 hours, so you always have the most current information available.
Why can't I find my address?
If your address doesn't appear, try: 1) Searching just the street number and name (without street type or apartment number), 2) Verifying the street name spelling, 3) For new construction, it may take several weeks after meter installation to appear in ERCOT.
